Rope lighting – Rope lighting can be found in different colors and voltages to produce different lighting effects. Ropes can be used to outline steps, ladders or surfaces. They are easy to install and can be removed without leaving unsightly marks or holes. Rope lighting is convenient for above ground pools that may not be able to accommodate recessed lights such as those found in many inground pools. Newer versions of rope lights can be purchased that are solar powered and do not have to be plugged in to work.

Lighted jets – Lighted jets can be purchased for pools, hot tubs and spas. Most come with switches that allow for the lights to be turned on when the jets are off and vice versa. High tech jet lights can be purchased that are capable of changing colors or turning on and off according to a specific song or to a timer that has been pre-set.

Food Intake, Satiety and Exercise Sensors to Combat Obesity

In the US, 35.7% of the population suffer from obesity, and they eventually develop obesity-related health conditions. In the UK, rather in the England alone, stats have increased to an alarming extent. Moreover, obesity causes 2.8 million adult deaths each year. This is probably the main reason why the European Union has decided to fund a range of hi-tech sensors that enables people to measure their food intake and activity in order to assess levels of obesity, helping them develop a healthier lifestyle. This projects is called Splendid.

Splendid was created to urge people, young ones especially, to adopt healthier lifestyles and make adjustments to their exercise and eating habits. Professor Anastasios Delopoulos from Aristotle University’s electrical and computer engineering department says that this new development stems from the idea to “try to investigate ways to prevent obesity and eating disorders.” Trials will be conducted to two sets of secondary school students, one in Sweden and another in the Netherlands.

The sensors created for the system is designed to monitor the speed at which food is eaten and even how food is chewed, as according to Delopoulos, the time taken to consume food can contribute to obesity. The sensors will make use the mandometer method, which is used to treat eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. It includes a scale that is connected to a small computerized device or a smartphone. When eating, food will be placed on the said scale while the sensor monitors the speed at which it leaves the plate. The sensor will then alert the user if their food leaves the plate too quickly. Being able to eat food at a much slower pace actually makes people feel sated much faster.

It’s important to note that there are only two FDA approved devices on the market today and that the makers of new devices will most certainly be required to enlist the services of a regulatory consulting firm.

There are two more sensors that will be designed for this purpose. These pieces of technology are currently being developed by the Swiss firm CSEM. One of these sensors is called ActiSmile, which is a device strapped on to the user during exercise. This will reward the user with a smiley face once he or she has achieved enough exercise for the day. The other device in development is said to record how a person chews his or her food through an acoustic sensor or a small microphone. The firm is also designing an acoustic sensor, which will take the form of a wearable microphone, and record how the user chews food.

New Technoloby and the Mobile Home Industry

Mobile homes, double-wides and triple-wides are being built using state of the art technology in an attempt to make them safer and more energy efficient than previous models. HVAC units, insulation, windows and appliances are all being manufactured to operate at peak efficiency while still providing maximum comfort and functionality. Rapid advancements in the field of technology allows for many different types of appliances and products that can be used to lower energy costs and save money on utilities.

Energy efficiency is the name of the game when it comes to manufactured housing. Companies that specialize in mobile homes and double-wides are using state of the art forms of insulation that have an “R” rating of 33 or higher to provide maximum protection against heat loss. Combining adequate insulation with energy efficient windows and a technologically advanced solar powered heating and cooling system provides the best options for saving both energy and money.

Newer models of manufactured homes are being equipped with solar power technology. Increased efficiency is a must with new environmental regulations being placed on the construction industry. With advancements in the HVAC industry and the use of energy efficient windows, making a home more electrically efficient is the next step. Solar power has been used for years as an accessory to many homes. As homeowner’s become more energy conscious, many are requesting the addition of solar panels and components to be installed during their home’s construction.

Technology is not only being used to improve the amenities of mobile homes and double-wides, it is also offering benefits during the homes’ construction and placement. Highly sophisticated CAD programs are being used to draw and design sectional homes. Manufactured homes are being designed to include three or more sections for individuals who need added space with the convenience of a “mobile” home set up. In some cases, four or more sections can be added to provide the amount of space a homeowner is looking for.

CAD programs can be used to design each section of the home separately and to the exact specifications of the owner. Once each section is complete, they can be put together, in much the same way as a jigsaw puzzle. Each piece can be adapted and maneuvered to create a unique, one of a kind home. The advanced nature of the software also helps when the home is being transported and built onsite. The same specifications used during the creation of the home are once again used to help place the home in its desired location.

The precision of the design program allows the home to be assembled with little or no alterations or adjustments. Sections are placed together, secured and sealed to meet the required specifications of the manufacturer. The advanced technology being used in the creation of today’s mobile homes, double and triple wides also reduces the risk of damage during severe weather. The stronger the homes’ construction, the more stable and secure it is during a severe storm or tornado.

GPS Receivers and Their Role in Geocaching

When braving the outdoors, GPS receivers are a valuable tool to bring along with you. They’re especially important to backpackers, cyclists, hikers, runners, snowboarders metal detectorists and skiers, and nowadays, a growing population of geocachers. Handheld devices now have special features designed for geocaching, which allows enthusiasts to download and view coordinates of caches and have access to other information that can guide them through their searches. It’s what geocachers have termed as “paperless geocaching.” But how important is having a handheld GPS receiver?

The Benefits of Havings a GPS Device

To those who have yet to be familiar with a GPS receiver, this piece of technology makes use of a sattelite system, a Global Positioning System, that broadcasts signals from our space sattelites and reflect them on your device. It generally does four things. For one, it can display coordinates. It can tell you your exact location; it can tell you the coordinates of specific place you need to be in; and it can tell you how far you are in reference to your desired destination. GPS receivers also have travel logs, useful for when you want to keep a record of places you’ve been to or routes you’ve taken. It can also instruct a user towards a certain destination, as you would experience in a car with a navigation system. What’s more is that this handy tool allows you to put together a series of stops so that you can create a map of the best route to take.

Choosing GPS Receivers Over Smartphones

We are pretty much aware that many of thd latest smartphones now have navigation features, as well. And apps like Google Maps, Google Earth and the like can easily be downloaded into a phone. But how are GPS receivers more advantageous than just using your phone for geocaching or other outdoor activities? The first advantage is design and durability. Haandheld GPS receivers are made for the backcountry, and so a lot of them have waterproof features. Second, they allow yout to use AA batteries, unlike smartphones which need car chargers or wall sockets for extra baterry life. Third, they havs better coverage, while many smartphones lose signal in far out places. And lastly, a GPS device doesn’t need data connection in order to work, so you get access to mapping options anytime, anywhere.
